Built around 5,000 years ago, it is a masterpiece of Neolithic design and construction – not least because of its use of massive stones. Maeshowe is the finest chambered tomb in north west Europe and is more than 5,000 years old. Viking crusaders broke into the cairn in the 12th century and carved graffiti runes on the walls of the main chamber. Maeshowe is part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, along with Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Maeshowe is made up of a large central chamber, with three side chambers built into the walls. It is accessed by a low, long entrance passage (see illustration below). The complexity of the chamber's architecture, and the grandness of its scale, has led to the idea that Maeshowe was built to demonstrate the power of a "social elite" within the prehistoric social systems of the time.

Maeshowe is not like other tombs built for the ancestors. It's much more elaborate, grander in its design and built - with huge effort - to impress. Was the piece of human skull that was found in the tomb the last mortal remains of the important Viking who may have been buried there when the bank was rebuilt in the 9th century?

Several inscriptions mention pillaged treasure: It was long ago that a great treasure was hidden here and Hakon alone bore treasure from this mound. According to the Orkneyinga Saga, Earl Rognvald Kali Kolsson broke into the chambered tomb of Maeshowe, on Orkney, in AD1150.
