Project Rebound began at San Francisco State University in 1967 by John Irwin, a professor who served time in prison for armed robbery in the 1950s. But it wasn’t until five years ago that the Project Rebound serves as a liaison and advocate with campus services and programs as well as with community organizations. By offering resources and connections with supportive entities, Project Rebound attempts to help students with their basic needs so that they can concentrate on their studies and achieve educational and personal empowerment.

The focus of Project Rebound quickly became “Education as an Alternative to Incarceration” and “Turning Former Prisoners into Scholars” after being embraced by Associated Students Incorporated. Since the program’s inception, there have been hundreds of formerly incarcerated folks who have obtained four–year degrees and beyond.
